“So, how many games have you been to this season?”
“Um, this is our first one."
“That’s cool. How are they doing this season?”
“Uh…well, they’ve only played one game before tonight, which they won. So, pretty great I guess!”
Then, with a quick wink and a nod, my friend and I decided to finish our beers and move on to Fenway.

The pavement and sidewalks are scrubbed clean. The security personal in charge of checking bags are smiling, the ticket takers friendly. Around us the crowd mills about, an excitement buzzing through the air. We dine on Italian Sausages and another round of beers outside in a pedestrian only street level area inside the gates. We hear the first notes of the national anthem. We scurry to the grandstand, take our seats.
The trees are still bare.
We have a six month season ahead of us.
And despite a phenomenal Sunday debut, we did not pull out ahead of the Evil Empire last night. Still, you wouldn’t have been able to wipe the grin from my face for a million dollars.
Because, man. It felt good to be back on hallowed ground.
A few days ago I was reading an article in a local magazine. It was filled with predictions about our upcoming season. They interviewed one man who said it best:
“The Red Sox will win some baseball games. Sometimes those games will be won in consecutive fashion. We’ll all admire the genius of the front office, the athletic prowess of the players and the beauty of the game. The Red Sox will lose some baseball games. Sometimes those games will be lost in consecutive fashion. We’ll all question the front office, be suspect of athletic abilities of the players and the ultimate unfairness of the game. During blowouts, Jerry Remy will giggle uncontrollably. It’ll be an awesome season.”
And indeed, it shall.

Good luck to you and your beloved Sox. It should also be noted that the Phils are playing some pretty good ball.
